"In March and April 2020, I spent some time in the island of Åvensor in the Turku Archipelago. From the window of my cabin, I could see the profile of a south-facing hillside, which suddenly became awash with flowers. Hepaticas were the first flowers to come into bloom, followed by cowslips later in April. The calcium-rich soil was particularly favourable for the growth of cowslipss. Before the hepaticas started to emerge from the ground, the colour of the soil reminded me of stockings, sotto bosco, to the extent that it was hard to believe that anything with such deep ultramarine hues, like hepaticas, could ever emerge from it. The colour of the cowslips can even compete with summer sunsets. The sun goes down over the western sea, gleaming in all the colours of the spectrum, while in the foreground, a yellow field of cowslips keeps shining in the dark."
